چکیده

Despite the seemingly irreducible simplicity of Witsenhausen’s counterexample, the optimal control law for the problem is not yet known. It has been observed that the counterexample contains an implicit communication problem. We formulate a vector version of the Witsenhausen counterexample that helps simplify the problem further while preserving its essential character. The vector version of the counterexample is shown to correspond to a previously unstudied communication problem which we dub “Assisted Interference Suppression.” Using concepts of lossy compression, channel coding, and dirtypaper coding, nonlinear control strategies are developed that outperform the optimal linear laws in the limit of large vector lengths for this new problem. The proposed techniques also outperform the best affine strategy and the known scalar strategies by an unbounded factor. A new lower bound is also developed using information-theoretic arguments that is sometimes better than that derived by Witsenhausen.

Witsenhausen's Counterexample and Its Links with Multimedia Security Problems

Witsenhausen’s counterexample was proposed more than four decades ago in order to show that affine control strategies are not optimal for systems with non-classical information patterns. Finding the optimal solution to Witsenhausen’s problem however remains an open problem. Recently, the stochastic control community has re-discovered Costa’s Dirty Paper result as a potential solution to Witsenh...

A Deterministic Annealing Optimization Approach for Witsenhausen's and Related Decentralized Control Settings

This paper studies the problem of mapping optimization in decentralized control problems. A global optimization algorithm is proposed based on the ideas of “deterministic annealing” a powerful non-convex optimization framework derived from information theoretic principles with analogies to statistical physics. The key idea is to randomize the mappings and control the Shannon entropy of the syst...

The role of common "context" in signaling

In order to signal effectively, is it sufficient for decentralized agents to share a signaling protocol, a common language? In this paper, we argue that the agents also need a common signaling “context” that can depend on the environment. Paralleling traditional communication, where mapping of information-sequence to codewords can be thought of as a “language”, the meaning attached to points in...

A vector version of Witsenhausen’s counterexample: Towards convergence of control, communication and computation

At its core, the renowned Witsenhausen’s counterexample contains an implicit communication problem. Consequently, we argue that the counterexample provides a useful conceptual bridge between distributed control and communcation problems. Inspired by the success in studying long block lengths in information theory, we consider a vector version of the Witsenhausen counterexample. For this example...

On the Generalized Witsenhausen Counterexample

Witsenhausen’s counterexample is a deceptively simple distributed control problem that has remained unsolved for the last 40 years. Our recent work uses information-theoretic techniques that exploit implicit communication between the controllers to obtain characterizations of optimal costs for the Witsenhausen counterexample to within a constant factor uniformly over the problem parameters. To ...
